The Ombudsman Commission investigated a matter relating to the non-payment of service entitlement, especially Money In Lieu of Furlough Leave (MILOF) for a retired teacher.
The teacher who retired in 2015, alleged that she never received her MILOF entitlement soon after her retirement and lodged a complaint with the Ombudsman Commission on 25 November 2020.
The information gathered from the investigation revealed that the teacher had obtained a loan and her entitlement was less than her loan amount deductions therefore she was paid her entitlement but all went for loan repayment.
The entitlement was deducted against the loan repayment therefore resulting in the non-payment of her MILOF entitlement. However, her record shows that she still has some amount owed to be paid.
Based on the above findings, the Commission is urging every employed citizen in the country to critically assess their financial standing to ensure that loan deductions are reduced so that it does not affect their final entitlement payout when an officer intends to retire or retrench.
Every working citizen must develop the habit of saving for the future and in an emergency period by controlling the amount of loan that is being obtained.
