OC’s intervention lead to arrest

Two men allegedly in possession of two high-powered firearms have been arrested and charged by police in Jiwaka Province.

The arrest comes after a complaint was made to the Ombudsman Commission Highlands Regional Office in Mt Hagen over the inaction of the Police Department on a complaint laid with the police in Jiwaka.

It was reported to police that two men in Kimil village were in possession of high powered firearms.

The Commission noted that the constitutional duty of police to protect lives and properties was not adhered to by the Jiwaka police and that the Police Department did not act upon the complaint within reasonable time.

The police finally acted on the matter and arrests were made after the Commission made several follow-ups.

The matter went before the district court and the two men were sent to jail for six and 12 months respectively.
