Commission’s Intervention Stopped Further Unauthorized Deductions Of K206.40 From A Teacher’s Fortnightly Salary

A teacher from a primary school in the Momase Region lodged a complaint with the Ombudsman Commission on 20 May 2024, alleging illegal payroll deductions totalling K206.40 from her fortnightly salary. She claimed that the deductions appeared to have been made through government administrative processes and wrongly attributed to a loan she had never applied for.

The complainant further stated that upon confronting the private finance company allegedly responsible for the transaction, the company confirmed that she had not obtained any loan from them. This led her to believe that the deductions were unauthorised and constituted an illegal transaction made without her consent.

The Ombudsman Commission registered the complaint and pursued the matter with the relevant education authorities at both provincial and national levels.

In response, the national education authority advised that the deduction was unintentional and likely resulted from confusion caused by teachers having similar names. The authority further confirmed that the matter had been rechecked and instructed the provincial education office to rescind the deduction process and refund all unauthorised deductions to the affected teacher.

Through the Ombudsman Commission’s intervention, the unauthorised deductions were stopped, and corrective action was initiated to ensure the teacher received her proper salary entitlements.
