In September 2023, the Ombudsman Commission conducted a routine site visit to a provincial government’s correctional institution. During its visit, the Commission noted that the administrative building was in a deteriorated state.
The Commission commenced its own initiative investigation in October 2023 and conducted necessary referral to the relevant authority of the responsible government institution.
In August 2023, the Commission was advised by the authority of the government institution responsible that the matter it had referred to had been elevated for appropriate action. The authority of the government institution responsible also advised that it would provide a progressive update on the matter to the Commission.
The Commission’s intervention resulted in a swift response by the corrective institution, which secured over K1.5 million under the relevant public investment program to engage the services of three different contractors for the project works.
The project for the new administrative building commenced in July 2023 and was successfully completed in January 2024.
The Commission revisited the corrective institution in August 2024 and confirmed that a new administrative building was constructed at the corrective institution and ready for commissioning in November 2024.
