Ombudsman Commission Intervention Improves School Facilities In Rural District

This report details a positive outcome resulting from the Ombudsman Commission’s intervention concerning poor school facilities in a rural district.

On November 23, 2022, the Ombudsman Commission initiated an Own Initiative Case based on a newspaper article dated November 16, 2022, titled “Villages putting strains on school facilities” published in The National.

On February 22, 2023, the Commission conducted a site visit to the school to inspect its deteriorating facilities. Subsequently, on June 19 and 20, 2023, the Commission issued a letter to the Member of Parliament (MP) for the relevant Open Electorate, addressing the issues at the primary school and inviting him to a meeting with the Members of the Commission. The MP accepted the invitation and met with Commission Members on July 19, 2023.

Throughout 2023 and 2024, the Commission sent numerous follow-up letters to the MP regarding the progress of a new double classroom being constructed by the District Development Authority.

Eventually, in 2025, the double classroom was completed and officially opened on April 22, 2025. Students commenced learning in the new facility on April 23, 2025. The Commission visited the primary school on May 16, 2025, confirming the successful completion and use of the classroom by the students. The project, costing K245, 000.00, was funded by the District Development Authority.

The school administration, teachers, and students of the primary school expressed their satisfaction and appreciation for the significant effort displayed by the Ombudsman Commission in facilitating this improvement.
